Topic Overview
Today, we’re going to discuss 5 ways you can turn your passion into a lucrative side hustle.
I went to college for art because that’s what I was good at as a young person. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that while I was good with pencil to paper, I wasn’t that savvy with computer-generated artwork. There was a disconnect for me between the mouse and the computer.
Anyone interested in fine art knows there’s essentially no money in it as a vocation. The term “starving artist” is a fact in most cases. However, times, they are a-changin’.
Around the same time I was in college failing miserably as a graphic designer (my grades were good, I just wasn’t that great at design), I heard somewhere that you shouldn’t do what you love for a living because you will come to hate it. I definitely didn’t want to hate art, so I stopped pursuing it as a career.
Whoever said that was incorrect.
This quote has been credited to both Marc Anthony and Confucius, but I find it much more relevant:
Choose a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.
Whether you are just looking for a side hustle or you are looking to replace your day job altogether, what better way to do that then to monetize your passions?
So, without further ado:
5 Hobbies You Can Turn Into Cashflow
- Crocheting, sewing, knitting, etc.
You can sell pretty much any handmade craft in a multitude of places online. The most popular place is probably Etsy. If you don’t know, Etsy is a shopping/selling platform specifically for selling handmade items. In this episode, I mentioned the ever-creative Katwise who creates these fantastic coats and hoodies from thrift store sweaters. She creates these coats in batches and announces her sales on her Facebook Page. When she’s not running a sale, all that’s in her Etsy shop are tutorials on how she makes these which I think is awesome. In fact, if you search Etsy, you will find a great many sellers who are selling these same style coats. I love to promote people who share the wealth!
Katwise sells these coats for hundreds of dollars, so depending upon the size of her batch, I’m sure she can make up to $10K to $15K each time she has a sale. - Golf or some other sport
Probably the best way to monetize your passion for sport is to share your knowledge. People want to know what you know. You can answer golf-related questions on a website like JustAnswer.com for pay. In fact, there are a ton of websites where you can share your expertise, so be sure to grab your copy of the show notes above for that bonus content. You can also create different types of content around your sport like videos, blogs, or my new favorite, a podcast! You can then monetize that content. You can create a forum or ecommerce website and sell products related to your sport. The possibilities are numerous! Also, for the record, ecommerce sites are are insanely simple to set up. - Gaming
If you’ve ever dreamed of playing video games all day, but couldn’t work out how to get paid at the same time, that is now a reality. You can live stream and/or create game play videos using Twitch.tv and YouTube and monetize on both of those platforms.Aside from that you can monetize further with CPA offers and put in affiliate links to the game on Amazon. You can even run your own game-related website and monetize with ads, affiliate offers, and more. - Playing guitar, piano, or other musical instrument
If your skill level is fairly high, you can offer lessons online for a fee via Skype, Google Hangouts, or even YouTube. Drue James has done this and expanded to his own website at LearnGuitarinLondon.com. Andy Guitar is another guy who has essentially done the same thing. So, you see it’s possible and there’s plenty of room out there for you as well.In addition to all of the possibilities online, this one can also be executed offline. You can offer lessons from your home or rent a small space. For the right price, your slots will fill quickly. - Scrapbooking and Journaling
While these might seem like solo activities, I follow several people on YouTube who stream their scrapbook and journal sessions online. It’s kind of fun to watch someone be creative and see what techniques they use to create beautiful books. I’ve learned quite a bit. Liz Drake is one of my favorites although it seems she has diversified her videos a bit in more recent months to include other things besides just journaling. She also sells journals on Etsy. Did you ever imagine there were so many ways to make money?
That’s a Wrap
The bottom line is that you can take pretty much any hobby or passion and turn it into money. What are you thinking of? What passion can you monetize? If you’re not sure how to get started, please contact me. I probably have some ideas for you to help you out with getting started.
Also, let me know your ideas in the comments below. We may use them in a future episode!
Promote A Stranger
In this episode, I mentioned NuggetNoggin. Nugget (I think his real name is Michael, but I’m not sure) has turned his passion into cashflow. He metal detects all over North Carolina, and even went to Europe last year. He has an exuberance and enthusiasm for the sport that is second to none. I’ve been watching him for 2 or 3 years on YouTube and he now has more than half a million subscribers.
Normally, I wouldn’t promote someone who has such a large following already, but Nugget has actually done what is discussed in this episode. He turned his hobby into money with his YouTube channel and now his own website where he sells metal detecting gear. He is living proof that what I’ve shared with you here is not only possible, but it’s also profitable!
Thanks!
Thanks for taking time out your life to hang out with me for a few and learn something new. Until next time…turning your passion into cashflow!
